About the Artist

Gary Langman was born in Montreal and graduated with honors from the Canadian Art Academy. Immediately after graduating, Gary worked as a commercial artist for a company called Studio "B". Desiring to further his studios as a fine artist, Gary enrolled into the experimental arts program at the Ontario College of Art. After graduating he went to trade school to get his welding certificate and he also worked for a plastic company learning the art of mould making and plastic forming or extrusions.

Besides sculpturing, most of Gary's time has been spent painting on canvas using oils. His most successful paintings aesthetically tend to be the simpler compositions, "knowing what to leave out is a skill that is developed over time and from listening to constructive criticism from those around you." Although I want my work to be striking from when viewed from across the room, I also want the viewer to continue to find interest when up close. Unexpected color, visual texture and large strong and solid shapes can provide the interest that keeps the view engaged in a painting. Taking liberties with a subject, especially with those that appear commonplace, also prove to be the key to a painting's effectiveness.

Gary's recent works are a water series that take nature and converge with mood and subject thought. The tension that exists between energy pounding itself against solid rock and unmovable barriers explode into a dynamic expression of life. "It is within this intense drama that a familiar object is turned from a natural phenomenon into an aesthetic experience. It is here the imagination separates itself from the realistic. It is from here where I want to introduce a little page out of life and make it readable.

Gary's art has sold to mostly corporate clients and private collectors. Shanam Energy, art investors, and Catch Restaurants are such clients. Galleries representing Gary's works are the Ferntree Gallery in Cochrane and Art Space in Calgary.
